Yes, it sounds silly to think of your brow having a job to do. Most of us have eyebrows and they just sit where they sit, do what they do. I assume that many people don’t even think twice about their eyebrows! (Can you imagine?) However if you follow social media and makeup trends, you will know that brows are a thing. For some, they are THE thing. Some people’s brows enter the room before they do! Big, overdrawn, dark brows can be found all over, some brows are bleached, dyed or even shaved off.
To get to the “job” our brows have, we need to go beyond trend. In the 60’s brows were thin and round, in the 80’s they got bushy and flat, in the 90’s they got thin again but angled and in the 00’s they were over-drawn, over-angled and dark. These were trends that came and went through the decades. If we forget about these trends and look at the brow in its natural state, we get to the fundamental “classic” techniques and rules that are always in fashion.
The eyebrow has many functions. They offer sun protection to our eyes for one, something many don’t think about. They also are a frame for the eye. From a distance our brows can help someone navigate the features of our face. From up-close the brows help keep focus on our eyes when someone is looking at us. So if you think of the brow as a frame, it makes sense that you want it to be in the right place.
The brow needs to sit directly over the eye. Starting right above the tear duct and ending slightly beyond the eyeball. A brow needs to be straight and solid looking without looking artificial. The first 2/3 of a brow slowly rise up to a peak and then the last 1/3 angles back down. A brow’s start and end need to sit at the same level horizontally. And lastly a brow should be as thick as a standard pencil. I know this is something much more easily conveyed visually, so I’ve created a video about it in this blog.
